One size doesn't fit all when it comes to mattress comfort levels and the same is true for mattress sizes. When choosing the perfect bed for your space, you should consider several important factors. Do you have pets or a partner that sleep with you? Is your apartment teeny tiny? Will your little one be going through a growth spurt in the next couple years? To help you asses which mattress size is best for you, we've outlined every bed type below.

Mattress Sizes

Twin Bed Dimensions

twin mattress measures 39 inches wide by 75 inches long, making it the smallest bed available. Because it takes up the least amount of space, it's best for small bedrooms or studio apartments. The dimensions of a twin-size bed work well for children and single adults who don't need a lot of wiggle room.

Twin XL Bed Dimensions

If you're a college co-ed chances are you're sleeping on a twin XL mattress that measures 39 inches wide by 80 inches long, making it five inches longer than a twin-size bed. Not in a dorm room? A twin XL also works well if you're taller or just short on space.

Full Bed Dimensions

Sometimes referred to as a double bed, a full-size mattress is 54 inches wide and 75 inches long. Because it's less expensive than a queen or king mattress, a full is ideal for young professionals on a budget or for guest rooms. However, it is just 16 inches wider than a twin so if you're sleeping with a pet or a partner this may not be your best bet.

Queen Bed Dimensions

If you share a space with your significant other, a queen-size mattress is likely your bed of choice (it's also the most popular size of a mattress in the United States!). It is 60 inches wide and 80 inches long, making it the perfect surface for those that need a little breathing room throughout the night. When selecting this size, just make sure your bedroom is at least 10 x 10 square feet.

King Bed Dimensions

If you're living in the master bedroom of your house or in a space that's at least 12 x 10 square feet, you may want a king-size mattress. At 76 inches wide and 80 inches long, it's the widest mattress on the market. So if you're sharing your bed with a partner, a pet or a little one from time to time, this bed's for you.

Fun fact, if you and your significant other prefer two different firmness options, you can buy an adjustable base or split king bed and order two twin XLs in the comfort level that's best for your body type and sleeping position.

California King Bed Dimensions

Go big or go home type of person? The California king size bed is the longest mattress available, measuring 72 inches wide by 84 inches long. That extra space at the end of the bed is ideal for pets and folks that are over six feet tall. When deciding between a king and a California king, just remember that the dimensions of a king mattress are four inches wider and a California king is four inches longer.
